Story
Stone Carving

As a village craft, stone carving is a traditional activity situated on the boundary between handicraft, cottage industry and folk art. Any activity aimed at working the stone and in the course of which elements used in construction, memorial signs or articles for personal use are made belongs to the sphere of this craft. Ever since the large-scale development of stone carving in the past two centuries, as regards the infrastructure of the Háromszék region, the construction of stone bridges, culverts, stone paved roads and railway embankments as well as placing landmarks along the roads were very important. Building elements and everyday objects were carved of stone for decorating churches, mansions and dwelling houses as well as for equipping village farms.

Red andesite was already worked in Magyarhermány in the 17th century. In Olasztelek and in the Barót region, you can find this material in the form of stone carved gateposts. Nowadays, traditional stone carving is practised in Mikóújfalu, Málnás and Kézdiszentlélek.
